What samples are needed?

We use the following types of samples:


ADULTS

Peripheral blood

  • 4-8 mL blood (1-2 small EDTA [purple-top] tubes – 4 mL per tube)

(5 mL is a teaspoon)

Bone marrow                   

  • 2-4 mL aspirate (in 1-2 small EDTA [purple-top] tubes – 2 mL per tube)

CHILDREN AND BABIES

Smaller amounts, as appropriate and determined by their doctor.

 

Sample arrangements and sending

 

    • Samples to be taken at the time of routine tests – we do not require additional lab visits
    • Send with a usual laboratory request form to Attn. Cell Marker Lab, LabPlus Haematology, Auckland Hospital and write “for MegBio – Dr Kalev” under the test request
    • Keep and send at room temperature
    • For donations of venesection blood from polycythaemic patients, please contact Dr Kalev or study team
